The Churchill Bar & Terrace bar has been designed with a young Winston Churchill and his beloved wife Clementine in mind. The design recognises, by way of contemporary touches, references to Churchill’s life in photography and art, in love and lifestyle and in travel and animals.
In this stylish London cocktail bar guests can enjoy classic cocktails, fine wines from the great Maisons and artisanal producers and a selection of cigars for smoking on the terrace.
The cocktail list has a strong identity with its own Churchill Craft Gin, heavy in juniper and citrus, home-made tonics and classic cocktails with a truly British legacy using the finest spirits. Signature cocktails include the Churchill Martini, using the bar’s bespoke London gin, the Ale Flip and T & Tonic. International classics such as Sidecar, Clover Club and Bobby Burns also feature.
A selection of British themed dishes are available throughout the day, using Churchill’s favourite ingredients. Winter dishes include: Scottish Quial Eggs, Angus Beef Steak Tartare and Cheese or Chocolate Fondue.
A selection of cigars, housed in a bespoke dark stained oak humidor made by DeArt, is available to purchase. The Cuban brands are supplied by the UK’s leading Cuban cigar importer, Hunters & Frankau.
The bar’s terrace is a convivial spot to enjoy drinks in London and features a specially commissioned life-size bronze of a young Sir Winston Churchill entitled ‘In Conversation’. Cast by renowned sculptor Lawrence Holofcener who also created “Allies”, the much loved statue of Sir Winston and Franklin D Roosevelt on a bench on Bond Street. Guests are encouraged to enjoy a cocktail or two with ‘Britain’s Greatest Briton’.
The elegant bookshelves, curated by local specialist booksellers Daunt Books, feature a range of literature on modern subjects that a young Churchill and Clementine would have found fascinating – art, travel, politics, gardening, fashion and so forth. Guest are encouraged to leaf through the books.
An unmissable feature of this unique cocktail bar in London are Jock, Rufus and Pig – the locally knitted animals that can be found on the bookshelves and are used to emulate Churchill’s use of his children’s toys as bookmarkers in his library at Chartwell. The animals reflect the signature pictures Sir Winston and Clementine used when writing love letters, Sir Winston was a dog (or often a pig) and Clementine, a cat.
With its own entrance on Portman Square, The Churchill Bar and Terrace seats 72 guests, 46 in the bar and 26 on the year-round heated terrace.
