Winter Fun in London
Christmas Lights:
When darkness falls, the magic of Christmas lights up London’s favourite streets and shop window displays. This provides the perfect starting point for those wishing to wrap up warm and take a stroll around London’s illuminations. Our very own Portman Square is lit up with elegant fairly lights, adorning the trees from 1 December. Each year the West End looks to top the previous year’s displays and 2009 is no exception.

This year both Oxford Street and neighbouring Regent Street have joined forces with Disney’s Christmas Carol, recreating the magic of Disney on two of London’s favourite shopping streets, the famous celebrity ‘switch on’ of both street’s lights is on 3 November this year. Not to be missed are the elaborate window displays of Selfridges, Liberty’s and Harrods, and for some strikingly different displays, the shops of Bond Street never disappoint!

Winter Markets:
In addition to London’s selection of markets running all year round, during the winter months and festive season enjoy seasonal delights in some fantastic spots in London.
Winter Wonderland 0.5 km/ 0.3 miles
From 21 November to 3 January Hyde Park is transformed into a Winter Wonderland for the third year running. With open air ice skating, a giant observation wheel and Zippo’s Christmas Circus, traditional German market stalls and dozens of rides. Each attraction is priced separately, or there are a number of packages on offer, however entry to the site is free for those wishing to soak up the atmosphere.

The Real Food Market at Covent Garden 2.8km/ 1.8 miles
The Real Food Market at Covent Garden is not to be missed. Set in the beautiful surroundings of Covent Garden, there are over 30 stalls bursting with festive delights from some of the UK’s most respected producers. The market will be open every Thursday and Friday evening from 12 November to 18 December from midday until 7:30 pm.

Cologne Christmas Market on London’s South Bank 3.5km/ 2.2 miles
For the month leading up to Christmas, wrap up warm and visit the Cologne Christmas Market, transforming London’s South Bank into a Christmas promenade. The cold wind might be whipping along the river but hot toddies and mulled wine are on offer to keep you warm whilst choosing from handmade arts and crafts and Christmas delicacies on sale.

London Freeze 5.4km/ 3.3 miles
For those looking for a less traditional festive outing, for the second year running, Battersea Power Station will be transformed into a unique snowboarding and ski venue featuring a 30m snow jump. This iconic south London venue will also host a funfair, as well as an après-ski style bar and live DJs.
